​Lifting and Lining: The machine uses hydraulic clamps or grabs to lift the rails and sleepers (ties) to the correct vertical and horizontal position. ​Vibrating and Compacting: Once in position, a set of vibrating tines, known as tamping banks, are driven into the ballast on both sides of each sleeper.
