Moisture Barrier: One of the most important functions is to protect the finished floor from moisture that can seep up from the subfloor. This is especially critical in basements, bathrooms, or when installing flooring over concrete slabs, as moisture can cause wood to warp, laminate to swell, and mold or mildew to grow. ​Sound Reduction: Underlayment can significantly reduce both airborne noise (e.g., voices) and impact noise (e.g., footsteps). This is particularly beneficial in multi-story homes or apartments, where it helps to muffle sound transfer between floors.
