A surface water pump is a type of pump designed to move water from a source that is open to the atmosphere—such as a river, lake, pond, tank, or shallow well—without being submerged in the water. How it works The pump sits above the water level and uses a rotating impeller (in centrifugal models) or other mechanical action to create suction. This suction draws water up through an inlet pipe and then pushes it out through a discharge pipe to where it is needed.
