This is why it is used for building insulation and keeping food and drinks hot or cold. The thermal resistance is measured by its "R-value." ​Shock Absorbent: The cellular structure allows it to absorb and dissipate energy, protecting fragile items during transport. This is a primary reason for its use in packaging. ​Moisture Resistant: While not completely waterproof, the closed-cell structure of XPS makes it highly resistant to water absorption, which is critical for insulation in building foundations. Even EPS does not readily absorb water.
