Ayam Cemani chickens, native to Java island in Indonesia, are considered one of the most striking birds in the world. What makes them unique is that their whole body is completely black feathers, skin, eyes, tongue, muscles, organs and even bones! This intense pigmentation is due to a genetic mutation called fibromelanosis, which causes an excessive production of melanoblasts, the cells responsible for melanin. That’s why they’re known as the “chickens of the dark side.”
